The CTD/Rosette

Not all parameters which are necessary to describe the physics and chemistry of the ocean can measured electrically with sensors which are added to a CTD. It is therefore important to have a system that enables sampling of water from selected depths. The system used for this is called rosette (looking at it from above, it looks similar to the rosette in gothic cathedrals). A frame around the CTD carries up to 24 plastic bottles, and scientists can close them at selected depths for sampling.

Often, a current meter is added to the CTD/rosette frame.

XBT/Bathythermographe

An eXpendable BathyThermographt probe is composed of a small projectile with a lead nose and a plastic enveloppe which contains a copper thread reel.

The probe is placed in a launcher and thrown into the sea.

During its descent in the water column, the thread reel unwind and transmit the measurements made by the temperature sensor to the computer equiped with an MK 12 board.

The software on the PC allows the real time chechking of the measurement T=f(P), and store this curve.
