Argo data can be used in various domains:
- In forecasting ocean models: Combining Argo data with other observations (in-situ or satellites) allow to reconstruct and forecast temperature, salinity, current fields and to improve, for example , forecast related to security and transport or oil spill monitoring.
- Evaluate the role of the ocean in the thermal global equilibrium: accumulation and heat transport, exchanges with atmosphere.
- Monitoring climate change and global warming.
- Accurate estimation précise of glabal warming to the sea level rise ( thermal dilatation of the oceans).
- Study salinity modifications linked to precipitations (mainly in tropical areas) or to sea ice melting (Arctic and Antarctic areas).
- Forecast El Niño event in tropical Pacific or study ocean - atmosphere interaction during monsoon and more generally improve seasonal forecast.
- Evaluate the role of the physical conditions (currents, temperature) in ecosystem variation and fishery management.
- Ocean role (heat transfert and fresh water) in the evolution of cyclones and typhoons.
- Monitoring deep water formation in winter that then fill in oceanic bassin in polar areas.
- Validation of new satellite mission that will measure sea surface salinity.
