Observing the Ocean

The CORIOLIS component « Observing the Ocean » coordinates the acquisition of in-situ measurements through the following priorities :

  • acquire in-situ data from ships (VOS and research vessels)
  • maintain the SO-SSS network, for collecting in-situ surface data during transit of  research or voluntary merchant vessels
  • maintain PIRATA observation system, for collecting in-situ data from a moored array in Tropical Atlantic

The general objectives of this component are to coordinate the French contribution to the observation of the WMO-IOC Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM), and maintain networks in operation at global and national scale.
