CORIOLIS products

The products provided by CORIOLIS are described here.

The different products provided are processed from in-situ observations. Depending on the targeted usage the products are made of:

  • different sets of observation networks (ARGO, GOSUD, ...)
  • different quality assesment level (automatic control, statistique control, scientific assesment).
  • different delivery update frequecy (near real time, delay mode, climatological)
  • sometimes computing is applied to observations to provide analysed dataset (optimal interpolation, ...)

Coriolis Portal to Argo Delayed Mode data

CORIOLIS-ARGO-DM-OBS

General information: Ocean circulation models need information on the interior of the ocean to be able to generate accurate forecast. The main in-situ network is presently the Argo network that provides 20 times more than research vessels. Coriolis data center is operating one of the two Global Argo Data Centers. Therefore it collects Argo profiles from the Argo data centers and disseminates the Argo in-situ data to users via unique portal. The Argo FTP site is updated a few times per day and synchronization with the second Argo GDAC , located in USA, is performed every night .

Processing information : the product is the homogeneous aggregation of Argo data coming from national Data Centers, quality controlled in delayed mode by scientists according to standardized procedures defined within Argo .

The measured parameters are : temperature , salinity occasionally dissolved oxygen or carbon...
The reference level of measurements is pressure (in decibars).

Quality/accuracy/calibration information : The free- moving nature of profiling floats means that most float salinity measurements are without accompanying in-situ ?ground truth? values for absolute calibration (such as those afforded by shipboard CTD measurements). Therefore Argo delayed-mode procedures for checking sensor drifts and offsets in salinity rely on reference datasets and statistical methods. An integrated statistical tool developed by Wong, Johnson, Owens (2003) estimates background salinity on a set of fixed standard isotherms, then calculates drifts and offsets by time-varying weighted least.

Coriolis Portal to Argo real-time data

General information: Ocean circulation models need information on the interior of the ocean to be able to generate accurate forecast. The main in-situ network is presently the Argo network that provides 20 times more than research vessels. Coriolis data center is operating one of the two Global Argo Data Centers. Therefore it collects Argo profiles from the Argo data centers and disseminates the Argo in-situ data to users via unique portal. The Argo FTP site is updated a few times per day and synchronization with the second Argo GDAC , located in USA, is performed every night .

Processing information : the product is the homogeneous aggregation of Argo data coming from national Data Centers, quality controlled according to standardized procedures defined within Argo .

The measured parameters are : temperature , salinity occasionally dissolved oxygen or carbon...
The reference level of measurements is pressure (in decibars).

Quality/accuracy/calibration information : On each profile individual automatic tests (peak detection, ....) are performed at the DAC. As a result of these tests, quality control flags are assigned to each measurement and included in the product. Coriolis performs additional statistical tests (comparison with climatology and neighbor measurements). On doubtful data visual control by ocean physics expert is performed and the responsible DAC is warned in case an anomaly is detected.
Suitability, Expected type of users / uses : The product is designed for assimilation into operational models research activities that are able to handle real-time data.

Coriolis Portal to DBCP drifters in real-time data

General information: DBCP is an international program, under JCOMM that collects current information from surface drifters  data,  transmits them in real-time. Coriolis collects the data on GTS , qualifies them and  provides both FTP and WWW access to the data

Processing information : Drifters data are qualified in real time using automatic procedures.

The measured parameter is currents .

Quality/accuracy/calibration information : On each timeserie individual automatic tests are performed for Coriolis by Méteo-France. As a result of these tests, quality control flags are assigned to each measurement and included in the product. . Collocated wind speed and stress from ECMWF model are provided with the measurement .


Suitability, Expected type of users / uses : The product is designed for validation of operational models.

Global Ocean- In-situ Observations Yearly Delivery in Delayed Mode

Short description:

For the Global Ocean- Coriolis global in-situ observation yearly delivery in delayed mode. The Coriolis delayed mode product designed for reanalysis purposes integrates the best available version of in situ data for temperature and salinity measurements. These data are collected from main global networks (Argo, GoSUD, OceanSites, WOD) completed by European data provided by EuroGOOS regional systems. It is updated on a yearly basis. It is the In Situ data nominal product for the Global Ocean.

General information : Ocean circulation models need information on the interior of the ocean to be able to generate accurate forecast. This information is only available from in-situ measurement. However this information is acquired all around the world and not easily available to the operational users. Therefore, Coriolis data center , by connecting to a lot of international networks, collects, controls and disseminates the relevant in-situ data to operational users. For reanalysis purposes, operational centers needs to access to the best avaliable datasets that gather more data then in realtime and where additional quality control procedure have been performed. This dataset suits research community needs Each year, a new release of the product is issued containing all the observations gathered by Coriolis. Processing information : In addition to the near real time validation done on a daily and weekly basis for forecasting purposes, it has been decided end 2006 to create, from the Coriolis database, a "reference product" updated on a yearly basis. This product has been controlled using an objective analysis (statistical tests) method and a visual quality control (QC). This QC procedure has been developed with the main objective to improve the quality of the dataset to the level required by the climate application and the physical ocean re-analysis activities. It provides T and S weekly gridded fields and individual profiles both on their original level and interpolated level. The measured parameters, depending on the data source, are : temperature, salinity. The reference level of measurements is immersion (in meters) or pressure (in decibars). Quality/accuracy/calibration information : The process is done in two steps using two different time windows, corresponding to two runs of objective analysis, with an additional visual QC inserted between. The first run was done on a window of three weeks, to capture the most doubtful profiles which were then checked visually by an operator to decide whether or not it was bad data or real oceanic phenomena. The second run was done on a weekly basis to fit the modelling needs. Suitability, Expected type of users / uses : The product is designed for assimilation into operational models operated by ocean forecating centers for reanalysis purposes or for research community. These users need data aggregated and quality controlled in a reliable and documented manner.

CORIOLIS Global Delayed mode Objective Analysis

General information : Global 1/2 degree analysis of temperature and salinity observations on 59 horizontal levels from 5 to 1950 m. This analysis (CORA_GLOBAL_02) has been produced as a delayed mode analysis of the content of Coriolis data base from 1st January 1990 to 31st December 2007.
Processing information : The analysis is performed on horizontal levels. Temperature and salinity variables are produced independently. The estimated variable is the anomaly relative to a monthly climatology, it is obtained as the solution of an optimal estimation problem where covariance matrices of data and field are specified.
Suitability, Expected type of users / uses targeted main uses :
  1. provide a data based reference for comparison with numerical models outputs
  2. study ocean variability

Global Ocean- In-situ Observations Daily Delivery

Short description:

For the Global Ocean- Coriolis global in-situ observations daily delivery. The Coriolis real-time product integrates the real-time in situ data for temperature and salinity measurements. These data are collected from main global networks (Argo, GoSUD, OceanSites, GTS) completed by European data provided by EuroGOOS regional systems. The data are quality controlled using automated procedures and statistical analysis residuals. It is updated daily. It is the In Situ data operational nominal product for the Global Ocean.

General information : Ocean circulation models need information on the interior of the ocean to be able to generate accurate forecast. This information is only available from in-situ measurement. However this information is acquired all around the world and not easily available to the operational users. Therefore, Coriolis data center , by connecting to a lot of international networks, collects, controls and disseminates the relevant in-situ data to operational users. Each day, a new release of the product is issued containing the observations which have never been disseminated in previous release or have been updated. A sliding window of the past 3 months of product is available at the In-Situ Each TEP. No Archive of the product releases is insured at the In-Situ TEP, only the individual observations are archived.
Processing information : the product is the homogeneous aggregation of observation data coming from various in-situ sources, quality controlled according to standardized procedure. the duplicate removal have been processed.Description of observation methods / instruments :

  1. profile data from ARGO profiling floats, CTD and XBT from research vessels or vessels of opportunity, mooring from various projects (animate, tao/triton/pirata, soon OceanSites) and profile data from GTS ( Global Telecommunication System in BUOY, BATHY and TESAC format).
  2. along the track data from thermosalinograph, ARGO profiling floats and drifting buoys available on GTS network.
The measured parameters, depending on the data source, are : temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen or carbon...
The reference level of measurements is immersion (in meters) or pressure (in decibars).
Quality/accuracy/calibration information : On each profile or underway data individual automatic tests (peak detection, ....) and statistical tests (comparison with climatology and neighbour measurements) are performed. On doubtful data visual control by ocean physics expert is performed. As a result of these tests, quality control flags are assigned to each measurement and included in the product.
Suitability, Expected type of users / uses : The product is designed for assimilation into operational models operated by ocean forecating centers. These users need data aggregated and quality controlled in a reliable and documented manner. As the different releases of the product are not archived by Coriolis , users have to manage their own in-situ data archive if they need it.

Global Ocean- Real Time In-situ Observations Objective Analysis

Short description:

For the Global Ocean- Coriolis Global Real Time Objective Analysis. Gridded objective analysis fields of temperature and salinity using profiles from the in-situ near real time database are produced every week. Objective analysis is based on a statistical estimation method allows to present a synthesis and a validation of the dataset, provide a support for localized experience (cruises), provide a validation source for operational models, observe seasonal cycle and interannual variability. It is the In Situ Objective analysis operational nominal product for the Global Ocean.

General information : The operational analysis system set up by the CORIOLIS data center produces temperature and salinity gridded fields by using profiles from the database. The system is based on an statistical estimation method (objective analysis). This system allows to: present a synthesis and a validation of the dataset, provide a support for localized experience (cruises), provide a validation source for operational models, observe seasonal cycle and interannaul variability. This system is exploited by the CORIOLIS data center in real time. Temperature and salinity fields are weekly processed and disseminated. It is also set up in delayed mode to produce re-analysis used for the qualification of the ARGO floats or climatological studies.

Coriolis Portal to GOSUD real-time data

CORIOLIS-GOSUD-NRT-OBS

General information: GOSUD is an international program that aims at collecting Thermosalinograph data from research vessels  and to transmit them in real-time. The program started in 2002 with French research vessels and VOS coordinated by IRD and was extended to European vessels within Mersea. Coriolis is operating one of the two Global Data Centers for Argo and providing both FTP and WWW access to the data

Processing information : Thersalinograph data are qualified in real time using automtic procedures.

The measured parameters are : sea surface temperature and sea surface salinity. It is planned to be extended to other variables in the future.

Quality/accuracy/calibration information : On each timeserie individual automatic tests (peak detection, ....) are performed at the DAC. As a result of these tests, quality control flags are assigned to each measurement and included in the product. . On doubtful data visual control by ocean physics expert is performed and the responsible DAC is warned in case an anomaly is detected.

Coriolis Portal to oceanSites real-time data

CORIOLIS-OTS-NRT-OBS

General information: OceanSites is an international program that aims at maintaining fixed point observatories in reference areas. It also aims at improving access to these reference data. Coriolis is setting up one of the two Global Data Centers ( the second one will be at NDBC/USA) and provides WWW and FTP access to these data. It has first integrated TAO/TRITON/PIRATA network as well as European sites operated within MERSEA. It will be extended in 2009 to the EU project Euro-Sites sites and other USA sites.

Processing information : The measured parameters are : temperature , salinity , currents. While new sites are integrated more parameters will be available. The reference level of measurements is pressure (in decibars).

Quality/accuracy/calibration information : In real time most of the parameters are not QCed except Temperature and Salinity were the same automatic tests as for Argo are performed at Coriolis as well as  additional statistical tests (comparison with climatology and neighbor measurements). On doubtful data visual control by ocean physics expert is performed and the responsible DAC is warned in case an anomaly is detected.

Données du réseau de bouées de houle géré par l université des Açores

UAC-AZORES_SWELL_BUOYS-OBS

Short description:

L'université des Açores maintient un réseau de bouées de houle autour de l'archipel, situé au milieu de l'Atlantique.

La houle est mesurée par des bouées de type WaveRider.
Les observations sont transmises en temps réel vers le site web de l'université.

De façon quotidienne, elles sont collectées par l'Ifremer qui les charge en base Coriolis, applique un contrôle automatique et les distribue vers MyOcean et le centre de données OCO.

Les paramètres collectés pour chaque bouée sont:
